The NYIC's Civic Engagement Fellow, André Mozeak, works to engage immigrant New Yorkers in the political process through initiatives like our Student Voter Registration Day. Here, he shares his thoughts on living in Queens, working at the NYIC, the new year and the new administration.
At the NYIC, our member organizations are among our strongest assets. The NYIC’s 135 member organizations serve diverse immigrant communities from across the globe, creating a transnational resource web of individuals, cultures, and organizations.
We had these communities in mind when we created our Member Highlight series.

The office of the Federal Register has announced that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will be changing the fees for immigration and naturalization benefit requests, which are processed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
The naturalization (Form N-400) fee will have three levels.
My name is Italo Medelius and I’m from Lima, Peru, originally. I come from a family of Italian descent, my grandfather was born in Italy, and he was the one that named me. My mom’s side of the family is Italian, and my grandfather married a native Peruvian woman, my grandmother. My father’s side is German, so that’s where the Medelius comes from.

Last week 22 New York City high school students from across the five boroughs graduated from the second cohort of the New American Youth Leadership Corps (NAYLC), an initiative run by the New York Immigration Coalition and supported with funding from Citi Community Development.

What are some things you’ve enjoyed or found positive about living in New York?
In my community, everyone is working hard either to support their family here and back home, to pay bills or go to school and this encourages me to work harder to provide a better life for myself and my family.

Arab American Association of New York
On a cold, blustery November morning, 140 women from gathered at the Beit al-Maqdis Islamic Center in Brooklyn to air their grievances. Since the presidential election, the Arab American community in South Brooklyn has experienced increased harassment and hostility from anti-Muslim and Islamophobic community members.
