Membership Spotlight – Dominicanos USA

Dominicanos USA is a nonpartisan organization committed to civic engagement that empowers the Dominican-American community in the United States by registering, educating, and mobilizing them to go out and vote.

The NYIC visited their office in the Bronx and sat down with their New York Organizer, Omar Suarez to learn more about their organization.

Membership Spotlight – Sauti Yetu Center For African Women And Families

Sauti Yetu Center For African Women And Families is a multi-issue community based organization that serves African women and families from all five boroughs, with offices in the Bronx and Staten Island.

The NYIC took the time to visit their office in the South Bronx and sat down with Staff Attorney, Trinh Tran and Legal Services Case Manager, Massange Kamara to learn more about their organization.

This past Tuesday, May 24th, a record 400 friends, allies, and supporters of the New York Immigration Coalition gathered for a wonderful evening to honor several distinguished champions for New York’s immigrant communities! Thank you so much for making our 2016 Gala such a special, festive and jovial evening filled with laughter, music, and most importantly – wonderful people.

Immigrant Roots- Mario Mendoza

I was born in El Salvador and came to the States in October of 1981. My mom was a teacher at the time in El Salvador, and she was part of a group of teachers who advocated for better salaries and work environment, much like a teacher’s union. The government did not allow people to organize and deemed these teachers “communist”, and told my mom that they would kill her and her sons if she did not leave the country.
