Position Overview

The Director of Immigrant Rights Policy will lead the Immigrant Rights program within the organization’s Policy department, managing a portfolio to end state support for detention, deportation and mass incarceration. The Director will drive work at the municipal, state, and federal levels to counter anti-immigrant policies, fight against out of control immigrant enforcement agencies, strengthen immigrants’ fundamental civil rights, ensure access to counsel and expansions of status, and end collusion between federal and local law enforcement.

Reports to: Vice President of Policy & Programs

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide vision and leadership on issues including ending state support for detention, deportation, and mass incarceration; increasing funding for immigration legal services and wraparound support; reforming detention, enforcement, and detainer policies; and ensuring access to counsel in immigration proceedings.
  • Identify systemic problems and define strategies for change, lead immigrant rights policy campaigns, and conduct administrative and legislative advocacy.
  • Lead policy development and analysis focusing on issues related to increasing foundational basic rights for immigrant communities; reforming detention, enforcement, and detainer policies; and expanding access to counsel and status.
  • Monitor overall developments and trends in immigration policy and analyze political context to identify needs for rapid response and opportunities to move reform initiatives forward.
  • Lead meetings and working groups, and engage NYIC member organizations in trainings and convening spaces related to Ending State Support for Detention, Deportation, and Mass Incarceration.
  • Make regular presentations and represent the NYIC at conferences, workshops, meetings, committees, coalition spaces, and City and State advisory bodies.
  • Contribute to other organizational events and projects as necessary.
  • Support the fundraising efforts of the NYIC’s Development team by providing content expertise and meeting grant requirements.
  • Manage program budgets.

Qualities Sought

  • Strong track record of success in leading local, state, and federal policy efforts; knowledge of immigrant rights and immigration legal issues at the local, state, and federal levels.
  • Detailed, expert knowledge of immigrant rights and immigration legal policy, and issues facing diverse immigrant communities throughout New York State.
  • Experience working with a diverse coalition and facilitating meetings with diverse stakeholders.
  • Understanding of coalition-building and grasstops organizing.
  • Proven ability to support fundraising and communications efforts.
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and minor social media skills.
  • Excellent communication, public speaking, and writing skills.
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment and juggle multiple tasks.

Salary Range: $80,000 to $90,000
