New York, NY—Today, New York Governor Kathy Hochul called on President Biden to expedite work authorization for asylum seekers by extending Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and to commit more resources to support asylum seekers in New York State. New York immigrant advocates and unions recently sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas calling for the designation, redesignation, renewal and expedition of TPS for recent arrivals.

New York, NY–This month, New York City announced over 110,000 New Yorkers are living in homeless shelters, including 58,000 immigrants seeking asylum.

“This past weekend marked the anniversary of the first buses arriving at Port Authority, and, still, the Federal government has made very little progress in delivering Humanitarian Parole or providing Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to these asylum seekers.

New York, NY— Yesterday, the Californian Court of Appeal rejected the challenge against Proposition N - which allows noncitizen residents who are adult parents or guardians of children under the age of 19 living in San Francisco to vote in school board elections.

New York, NY—Today, NYC Mayor Eric Adams announced the opening of a new Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center (HERRC) at Randall’s Island, in partnership with New York State. This announcement followed on the heels of the opening of a new respite site for recently arrived asylum seekers at the Sunset Park Recreation Center in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

New York, NY—Today, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California blocked the Biden Administration’s asylum ban. This unlawful policy was put in place at the end of Title 42 in May, and has been used to deny migrants their right to claim asylum.

New York—Yesterday, the Schenectady County Legislature passed a resolution directing their County Manager to issue a state of emergency and emergency order that temporarily prohibits New York City from relocating asylum seekers to Schenectady County. Starting on July 18, three buses carrying around 150 asylum seekers arrived at the Super8 Motel in Rotterdam.

New York, NY—Today, NYC Mayor Eric Adams announced that the City will begin imposing a 60-day limit for how long people can stay in shelters.
