New York, NY—This Thursday, in partnership with The City, City Limits, Gotham Gazette, CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies, and the New York Immigration Coalition's sister organization, NYIC Action, will host the first Mayoral forum dedicated entirely to immigration.

New York, NY-Today, the May Day New York Coalition called on Washington to deliver a bold immigrants' and workers’ rights agenda. Standing in solidarity, essential workers, advocates, union members, and elected leaders demanded a pathway to citizenship for millions of immigrant workers and their families, as well as the rights of workers to organize and work in dignity without fear of retaliation and discrimination.

New York, NY-New York immigrant rights advocates, led by the New York Immigration Coalition, praised President Joseph R. Biden’s renewed commitment to a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status holders, and essential workers. The NYIC also double-downed on their call for a transformation of the country’s immigration system, a promise of the Biden campaign.

On Monday afternoon, the US Census Bureau announced the apportionment of Census data for each state. For New York, the apportionment will mean losing a Congressional seat in the US House of Representatives. This Census data will serve as the foundation for the redistricting process in New York, and by 2022 virtually every single political district in New York State – from local offices to state Assembly and Senate districts to Congressional districts – will be redrawn.

New York, NY—The Board of Directors of the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) has selected Murad Awawdeh as its next Executive Director. Murad Awawdeh will succeed Steve Choi, who stepped down in September 2020 after 7 years of leading the organization.

On Tuesday afternoon, Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murder for the death of George Floyd, who died struggling to breathe under Mr. Chauvin’s knee last May. The murder, captured on video, set off months of protests across the country against the police abuse of Black Americans.

New York, NY-Today, the Biden administration announced it would maintain its predecessor’s historic-low number of refugee admissions goal for FY 2021 in place for the remainder of this fiscal year. Immigrant rights advocates slammed the move as a direct reversal of President Joseph R Biden’s previous commitment to raise the cap.

New York, NY-Immigrant rights advocates praised the New York City Council’s response to Mayor Bill de Blasio’s preliminary budget as an important first step towards an equitable recovery for all The City Council’s response included investments in immigrant legal services, language access, and the brand new Office of Street Vendor Enforcement.

Albany, NY—Tonight, the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), members, allies, and immigrant New Yorkers cheered the largest investment in New York’s 4.4 million immigrants in decades of state budget advocacy. The FY 2022 NYS budget deal includes $2.1 billion for a first-of-its-kind fund for excluded workers,  $29.5 billion for New York’s schools, a $7.8 million reinvestment in adult literacy education, $13.5 million to support AAPI communities, a  $16.4 million reinvestment in the Liberty Defense Project and the Office for New Americans, $15 million to support communities hardest hit by COVID to promote awareness and education on the vaccine, and $1 billion for small businesses.
