Adams Blames Budget Cuts on Asylum Seekers Instead of His Own Failings

New York, NY—Today, the Adams administration announced another round of 5% budget cuts across all city agencies in its updated budget.

Murad Awawdeh, Executive Director, New York Immigration Coalition:

“Mayor Eric Adams just announced another round of severe budget cuts across every city agency, effectively shattering our social safety net and reducing access to crucial services for millions of New Yorkers. Once again, the Mayor is scapegoating asylum seekers while refusing to implement solutions we know can save the City billions of dollars annually and relieve pressure on our shelter system. This situation is of the Mayor’s own making, as he has failed to shift from a haphazard, emergency response to implementing a long-term strategy that gets new arrivals on the road to stability, employment and self-reliance.  By expanding access to CityFHEPS housing voucher eligibility to all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status, the cost of housing families would sharply drop from $394 a night to an estimated $72 a night. Today’s budget cut proposal shamefully pits New Yorkers against each other and will prove detrimental to the health, safety and stability of our entire city, from asylum seekers to seniors."
