New York, NY—In response to the earthquake that has devastated Türkiye and Syria and taken more than 3,000 lives, the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) called for an immediate designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS), Deferred Enforced Departure (DED), and Special Student Relief (SSR) for Turkish people in the United States, and for further extending and redesignating TPS for Syrian people.

Hochul’s FY24 Budget Falls Short for Immigrant New Yorkers, Advocates Demand Full and Equitable Inclusion

New York, NY—Today, Governor Hochul released her FY24 executive budget, which included limited and insufficient funding for immigrant New Yorkers. Governor Hochul included $43M in funding for immigration legal services and the Office for New Americans, while failing to include any investment to expand health coverage for all New Yorkers, regardless of their immigration status.

Hochul Fails to Include Immigrant New Yorkers In Her Vision for New York in 2023 State of the State Address

New York, NY—Today, Governor Hochul delivered her State of the State address and failed to include any mention of her vision for a New York agenda that includes immigrant New Yorkers. In her State of the State briefing book, Governor Hochul committed to working towards retraining immigrants who previously worked in skilled jobs, connecting asylum seekers with agricultural and food industry jobs, providing funding for refugee resettlement programs, expanding funding for the Office of New Americans, and expanding Essential Plan and Medicaid coverage for low-income New Yorkers.

Title 42 Must End, NYIC Praises Justice for Asylum Seekers

New York, NY—Today, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals denied an appeal for a stay over Title 42, which is currently slated to end on December 21. The New York Immigration Coalition praises the rejection of this appeal, which would have recklessly endangered the lives of asylum seekers, while demanding the expansion of additional protections for asylum seekers.

Immigrant Advocates Applaud Extension and Redesignation of TPS for Haiti

New York, NY—Yesterday, the Department of Homeland Security announced the extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti for an additional 18 months, from February 4, 2023, through August 3, 2024. Secretary Mayorkas also redesignated Haiti for TPS, allowing Haitian nationals residing in the United States as of November 6, 2022, to apply for TPS through August 3, 2024, so long as they meet all eligibility requirements.

First-In-Nation Legislation Would Create State Right for Legal Representation to Support Newly Arrived Asylum Seekers & Immigrant New Yorkers

NEW YORK – In response to Texas, Florida, and Arizona officials bussing nonconsenting asylum seekers to New York City and other surrounding regions, a broad coalition of elected officials, advocacy organizations, and impacted families today launched the new Campaign for Access, Representation, and Equity (CARE) for Immigrant Families, to pass the Access to Representation Act (S81B/A1961A). The bill will guarantee access to lawyers for immigrants at risk of deportation in New York.
