Immigrant Advocates Blast POTUS for Appealing Court Ruling That Would End Title 42

New York, NY—Today, the Biden administration announced that it would appeal the court ruling that invalidated the Trump-era Title 42 border restrictions that have been keeping people from exercising their legal right to apply for asylum in the United States. The Title 42 program is currently slated to expire on December 21, 2022.

Murad Awawdeh, Executive Director, New York Immigration Coalition:

“Today’s announcement from the Biden administration is the worst kind of political football. After defending Title 42 for a year, the administration tried to end the program this spring. Now that the court has found the use of the program to block access to asylum unlawful, the Biden administration is attempting to make an end-run around our humanitarian obligations.
Americans looked forward to turning the page on our anti-immigrant past when they voted President Biden into office, and showed up to the polls during the midterm elections to continue to fight for all marginalized communities. But instead of offering hope, our federal government is turning its back on vulnerable people who want nothing more than safety for their families. The United States must uphold an asylum system that is fair, humane, and just for all people. It is time for Title 42 to be ended once and for all. It is time for the Biden administration to make good on its promises and return America to being a beacon of hope and refuge.”
