NYIC Denounces Stay of Remain in Mexico Policy, Demands Immediate End to Discriminatory Trump-Era Policy

New York, NY—Yesterday, U.S. District Judge Matthew Kasmaryk in Texas stayed the termination of former President Trump’s Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), or Remain in Mexico program, until pending legal challenges from Texas and Missouri are decided. The New York Immigration Coalition demands the immediate termination of Remain in Mexico and expanded protections for migrants and asylum seekers.

Murad Awawdeh, Executive Director, New York Immigration Coalition:

“The long-awaited permanent end of the Trump administration’s Remain in Mexico policy continues to be delayed by conservative judges who routinely put politics ahead of actual human lives. This policy has put thousands of vulnerable people needlessly in harm’s way and ignores our human rights obligations to provide a sanctuary and due process for them. While this stay didn’t reinstate the Remain in Mexico, we won't rest until this racist and fear-mongering policy is completely eliminated and the United States’ status as a beacon of hope and sanctuary for the world is restored.”
