Immigrant NYers Applaud President Biden’s Elimination of Title 42

New York, NY—Today, President Biden ended the Trump-era Title 42 policy, which denied people their right to claim asylum under the guise of public health concerns. The termination of Title 42 will go into effect on May 23, 2022. The New York Immigration Coalition proudly applauds this decision, while demanding the Biden administration expedite the effective termination date of Title 42 and continue to expand protections for migrants and asylum seekers.

NYIC Applauds Long-Awaited TPS Designation for Afghanistan, Demands Equity for Black and Brown Migrants

New York, NY—Today, the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) commended the Department of Homeland Security’s designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghanistan. While NYIC welcomed a decision long sought after by advocates, the organization underscored the continued exclusion from similar protections facing Haitians, Cameroonians, Ethiopians, Mauritanians, Black migrants attempting to flee Ukraine, and other Black migrants.

New York, NY—Today, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer joined Senator Bob Menendez, U.S. Representative Nanette Diaz Barragán, immigration experts, and children’s advocates, to demand that President Biden fully restore access to asylum and revoke Title 42. The New York Immigration Coalition proudly echoed this demand.

Hundreds of Immigrant Advocates March at State Capitol Demanding Lawmakers Pass Health Coverage for All

New York – Today, the Coverage for All coalition, alongside elected officials and impacted individuals, rallied at the State Capitol in Albany to demand the inclusion of the Coverage for All bill in the upcoming state budget.

Uninsured immigrants who would be eligible for health coverage under the legislation shared their struggles to access medical care before and during the pandemic.

New York, NY- Last week, Mayor Eric Adams announced the appointment of Erick Salgado to the position of Assistant Commissioner of Outreach at the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA). Considering Salgado’s prejudicial history of anti-LGBTQ+ views, it is unequivocally inappropriate for him to lead immigrant services that are grounded in freedom and inclusion for New York City.

Immigrant Advocates Rally in Harlem in Demand of Passage Of Coverage for All

New York, NY—Today, the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) and the African Services Committee (ASC) rallied together to demand healthcare for Black immigrants in New York through the passage of the Coverage 4 All bill.

Leaders from both organizations spoke about the need to pass the legislation, and how the pandemic has exposed inequities in healthcare coverage especially for immigrant New Yorkers.

New York, NY-Today, the Our City Our Vote Coalition, led by the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) and United Neighborhood Houses, were joined by allies, and immigrant New Yorkers in a rally at City Hall to celebrate securing a supermajority of 35 co-sponsors on New York City Council bill Intro 1867 and to thank Council Speaker Corey Johnson for scheduling a vote on December 9, 2021. Intro 1867 would extend the right to vote in municipal elections to roughly 900,000 immigrant New Yorkers with legal permanent residence status or work authorization.
