New York, NY—Yesterday, in a 5-4 vote the Supreme Court of the United States granted the Trump administration’s request to stay the previously issued federal injunction that blocked the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) public charge rule from going forward.

On January 15, 2020, New York became the first state in the nation to introduce legislation that would guarantee all immigrants have access to a lawyer when facing deportation. The Access to Representation Act is an essential piece of legislation that would empower immigrants to protect themselves and their families from the Trump Administration’s deportation machine.

“We thank Governor Cuomo for heeding the advice of African Communities Together, Masa, the Asian American Federation and the NYIC by supporting the expansion and codification of NYS’ language access executive order.

The report includes recommendations to invest $25 million in Adult Literacy Education and increase access to home visiting programs for immigrant families to address the early childhood education needs of a growing number of children and their parents.

Drawing on interviews conducted across the state, the report reveals the unique challenges these families face when trying to access quality early childhood programs for their young children (0-8). It provides specific and comprehensive recommendations to increase access to quality early childhood education for the growing population throughout the state.
