ALBANY, NY – Today, elected officials joined the CARE for Immigrant Families coalition at the Million Dollar Staircase to demand the passage of the Access to Representation Act (ARA). The first-in-the-nation bill would establish a right to counsel in immigration court proceedings.

New York, NY—Today, President Biden announced that Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients would soon be allowed to access government-funded health insurance programs, including Medicaid. The New York Immigration Coalition welcomes this expansion, which will provide essential lifesaving care to nearly 600,000 DACA recipients, while demanding that Congress and President Biden provide a pathway to citizenship.

New York—On Thursday, April 13 the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), immigrant parents and students, educators and advocates rallied and held a press conference on the steps of Tweed Courthouse to demand that New York City create more equitable access to public schools for immigrant youth and families through two critical education programs, and rejected the Mayor’s proposed 3% cuts to the Department of Education (DOE) budget.

New York, NY—Today, news broke that the Adams administration is ordering some city agencies to slash their budgets by an additional 4% on top of cuts implemented last year. Budget Director Jacques Jiha wrote in a letter to agency heads that these cuts, known as Program to Eliminate the Gap (PEGs), would be part of the Mayor’s executive budget to come out later this spring.

New York, NY— Earlier this week, a fire broke out in a government-run migrant detention center for men in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, near the southern border with the U.S. and across from El Paso, Texas. According to reports, of the 68 people in the shelter, at least 38 were killed and 11 were injured.

New York, NY — Today, the United States and Canada reached a joint agreement to limit the entry of asylum seekers at their borders. This came after reports of asylum seekers entering Canada via unofficial points of entry, such as Roxham Road, along the northern border of the United States.
