New York City is globally renowned for embracing and integrating millions of immigrant residents, who are at the heart of the city’s tremendous cultural, social, and economic vibrancy. Citywide, immigrants represent 37 percent of the population, 45 percent of the workforce, and 49 percent of small business owners.

A coalition of immigrant advocacy organizations will release a report on Tuesday calling on Mayor Bill de Blasio to increase funding in areas like legal services, adult literacy and affordable housing.

This investment in adult literacy education from community-based organizations, CUNY, and the public libraries addresses the crisis of 1.7 million New York City residents who lack English proficiency, a high school diploma, or both.
