Immigrant Advocates Applaud TPS Re-Designation and Extension for Somalia, Urge Pathway to Citizenship for All

New York, NY—Today, the Department of Homeland Security announced the extension and redesignation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalia for 18 months, from September 18, 2024 to March 17, 2026, benefiting an estimated 4,900 people, if they are otherwise eligible.

This extension and redesignation does not apply to anyone who was not already in the United States on July 12, 2024. Current TPS Somalia holders must re-register during the 60-day period from July 22, 2024, through September 20, 2024, to maintain their TPS and work authorization.

Murad Awawdeh, President and CEO, New York Immigration Coalition:

“More than 5,000 Somalis continue to call New York their home, contributing to the state’s rich cultural diversity and economic fabric. The extension and redesignation of TPS for Somalia is a crucial step forward to ensuring safety and security for Somali New Yorkers. While we applaud the Biden administration for recognizing the ongoing humanitarian and armed conflict in Somalia by its actions today, we continue to urge leadership in Congress and the White House to take necessary action toward establishing a permanent pathway to citizenship for all immigrants seeking the opportunity to live with dignity and stability with their family and new community, here in the U.S.”
