Biden Announces End to Remain in Mexico But Falls Short of Definitive Timeline, NYIC Demands More

New York, NYThe Biden administration announced their intention to end the Remain in Mexico program yesterday, following the Supreme Court certification of Biden v. Texas last week. The New York Immigration Coalition demands more substantial guidelines from the Biden administration on their suspension of Remain in Mexico, and that this policy be ended immediately.

Murad Awawdeh, Executive Director, New York Immigration Coalition:

“While yesterday’s announcement of the end of Remain in Mexico is welcome news for the thousands of people seeking asylum in our country, it falls short of the meaningful action needed years into this program. As Remain in Mexico has needlessly endangered people seeking freedom from violence and poverty in the United States, the Biden administration has a moral imperative to end this policy without further delay and protect migrants previously impacted by this program. President Biden’s hollow promise to protect those seeking refuge in our country must be rectified now by issuing clear guidance and a definitive timeline on the formal end of Remain in Mexico. This superficial announcement is a slap in the face to the people and families who have been imperiled by Remain in Mexico for years, and the Biden administration must do more to right this wrong.”
