Immigration Advocates Decry Trump’s “Bigoted, Short-Sighted” Expansion of “Muslim Ban”

New York, NY—Today, President Donald Trump announced an expansion of the travel ban to include Burma, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Sudan, and Tanzania. Immigrant visas were restricted for Kyrgyzstan, Burma, Eritrea, and Nigeria. Sudan and Tanzania have diversity visas suspended. Non-immigrant visas were not affected.

The following is a statement from Steve Choi, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition:

“It’s yet another dark day in America. The White House’s expansion of the Muslim Ban will only mete out more suffering– more families will be kept apart, more students will be unable to finish their studies, more businesses will lose valuable employees and the United States will, once again, lose credibility, and moral standing in the world. Expanding the ill-conceived and discriminatory Muslim Ban on its third anniversary is a pathetic attempt to rally the President’s base while distracting us from the real evidence of his misconduct during the impeachment inquiry. The American people expect more from our leaders and we call on our Congress Members to immediately pass the No BAN Act.”
