New York, NY—Yesterday, Mayor Adams vetoed Introduction 47-B, a legislation that would have removed criminal penalties for unlicensed street vendors across New York City and would instead have replaced them with civil fines. Last month, the New York City Council passed the bill with a 40-member majority.
Murad Awawdeh, President and CEO, New York Immigration Coalition:
“Immigrant New Yorkers are facing unprecedented attacks from the federal government, and Eric Adams is choosing to exacerbate the threats. Instead of protecting all New Yorkers, Mayor Adams is choosing to double down on the further criminalization of our small business owners who are simply trying to provide for their families. By vetoing Intro 47, the Mayor is actively putting more New Yorkers at greater risk—harming their ability to potentially access educational and housing opportunities and subjecting them to more potential avenues of attack from Donald Trump and ICE. The Mayor should be investing in real solutions that would allow immigrants to contribute fully to the city’s economy. We look forward to working with the City Council to right this wrong by overriding the Mayor’s veto.”
