NEW YORK, NY – Today, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the appointment of Nisha Agarwal, former Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA), to serve as Senior Advisor to the Deputy Mayor for Strategic Policy Initiatives, Phil Thompson. Bitta Mostofi, acting Commissioner of MOIA, has been appointed the new Commissioner of MOIA.
Steven Choi, Executive Director of the New York Immigration Coalition, issued the following statement:
“Both Nisha Agarwal and Bitta Mostofi have been key allies and huge advocates for immigrant New York. As Commissioner, Nisha Agarwal spearheaded truly landmark accomplishments such as idNYC - empowering more than a million New Yorkers and immigrants by providing them safety, security and a promise to be included in New York's civic life. Her leadership for the innovate ActionNYC program also was a harbinger of the Mayor's record investments in immigration legal services, at a time when they have been more needed than ever.
"We also welcome Commissioner Mostofi, who has played such an integral role in several of these outstanding accomplishments and brings a wealth of experience as an attorney, activist and leader for our communities. We wish them both continued success, and look forward to working closely with MOIA to empower New York's three million immigrants.”
