New York, NY—Today, Governor Greg Abbott of Texas announced that he sent asylum seekers by bus to New York City. Since April 2022, Texas has sent over five thousand asylum seekers by bus to Washington, D.C., many of whom have continued their journey to New York City.

Mayorkas, which include nearly 100,000 first-time Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) applicants whose applications are in limbo and DACA recipients applying to renew their status after a year or more lapse.

The New York Immigration Coalition applauds this decision, which will protect the many Syrian refugees who have recently arrived in the United States, while demanding permanent and equitable protections for all refugees and asylum seekers.

New York, NY—Last night, the Supreme Court of the United States allowed Judge Drew B. Tipton of the Federal District Court in Virginia to block the Biden administration’s immigration enforcement guidelines; the Court said it would take up an appeal and hear arguments later this year.

New York, NY—Today, New York City Mayor Adams announced that over 2,800 new asylum seekers from Latin America have arrived in New York City’s shelter system. The Mayor stated that some of these migrants were being sent to New York by bus from Texas and Arizona, while others were sent by the federal government.

New York, NY—Today, the NYC Districting Commission released its preliminary plan on the new City Council district maps. The New York City Charter mandates that the maps are redrawn every 10 years to reflect changing demographics from the census. There will be another round of public hearings in each borough in August, and the plan will then be submitted to the City Council in September.
