City Budget Delivers Key Wins for Immigrant New Yorkers: Legal Services, Childcare, Libraries & more

New York, NY—Today, the New York City Mayor and the City Council announced a handshake deal on a $115.9 billion executive budget for FY26. The NYIC fought for a range of programs to support immigrant New Yorkers, and applauds the inclusion of several priorities in this deal, including $55 million in immigration related legal services and $10 million in funding for universal childcare.

Murad Awawdeh, President and CEO, New York Immigration Coalition:

“Today’s handshake deal marks an important step toward investing in working-class New Yorkers. As Trump’s renewed immigration crackdown has led to an increase in ICE arrests, including the targeting of New Yorkers at immigration courthouses—-spaces that are meant to deliver due process not kidnappings—the increase to $55 million in immigration related legal services is not just timely, it’s a lifeline. The additional library funding and services will ensure that programs that immigrant New Yorkers rely on, like language services, will continue to be available as a resource for all. The deal also delivers a historic investment in our city’s future by committing $755 million to after-school programs and expanded access to universal childcare. These will strengthen working-class families, provide critical support for parents, and improve outcomes for children across the city. We commend NYC Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and the entire City Council for standing with our communities and ensuring that hard working New Yorkers would not be left behind in the FY26 budget.”
