New York Restores Access to Driver's Licenses for Immigrant New York
New York, NY– Yesterday, the Green Light NY bill was brought to a floor vote in the New York State Senate and passed 33-29, with all but seven Democrats voting in favor of the bill that would restore access to driver's licenses to immigrant New Yorkers, regardless of legal status. Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the measure quickly into law soon after the vote.
Steven Choi, Executive Director of the New York Immigration Coalition and facilitator of the Green Light NY Coalition said:
“Today is a historic day for New York’s hard working immigrant community. We are glad to see that Governor Cuomo ultimately did the right thing by quickly signing the Green Light NY bill into law. Our New York State electeds have sent a message - that while Donald Trump and his cronies look to scapegoat immigrants, the Empire State will protect them. We’ve done that with by restoring driver’s licenses to 250,000 New Yorkers and we’re just getting started.”
