Trump Administration Continues to Erode Due Process for Immigrants
NEW YORK, NY - On March 7th, 2018, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a new, troubling change in the way that the U.S. runs its historic and successful asylum system, changing how the Department of Justice will interpret asylum cases and the laws set by Congress and International treaties.

Suffolk County’s new sheriff, Errol Toulon Jr., replaced Vincent DeMarco in January. De Marco, a staunchly conservative supporter of President Trump’s immigration policies, had established a policy of tight cooperation with ICE. He used the Sheriff’s Department to enforce immigration laws in Long Island’s easternmost county and rented detention space in the county jail to ICE.
There were hopes that Sheriff Toulon, a Democrat, would follow his national party’s lead by reconsidering DeMarco’s anti-immigrant program.
