Albany, NY—Today, the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), partners, legal service providers, immigrant New Yorkers and allies will rally at the New York State Capitol in support of the Access to Representation Act (ARA, S141/A270) and the Building Up Immigrant Legal Defense Act (BUILD Act, A2689/S4538) for the 2025 New York State Legislative Session.

New York, NY—Today, the Trump administration cut funding to a program that provides legal representation to unaccompanied asylum-seeking children. This decision immediately halts funding for legal assistance to tens of thousands of children under the age of 21 years navigating the immigration system without a parent or guardian.

New York, NY—Earlier this week, the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision regarding the future of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program officially went into effect. 

The court’s decision would allow first-time DACA applications to be processed across all 50 states.

Albany, NY—Today, the New York State Senate and Assembly submitted their one-house budget resolutions. Both houses included the Working Families Tax Credit, in full, including proposals for investments totaling $75 million for legal services. However, neither One House budgets included further investments in the Language Access Act.

New York, NY—Last night, a student activist at Columbia University was reportedly arrested by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). He is now being detained at the Elizabeth Detention Center in New Jersey. Mahmoud Khalil has a green card, and his wife (a U.S. citizen) is eight months pregnant.

New York, NY—It has been reported that the Trump administration is reopening multiple detention centers to detain immigrant families in addition to ICE targeting immigrant families. ICE also continues to build its deportation infrastructure with the reopening of a massive detention center just outside of New York City.

New York, NY—Last month, USCIS issued guidance on the Trump administration’s Executive Order on national registration. The guidance announced  that most individuals over 14 years old living in the United States without immigration status will need to register with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) – if they are not already registered with them –  and provide their fingerprints and address.

New York, NY—This weekend, President Trump signed an executive order designating English as the official language of the United States. The executive order announcement rescinds a 2000 federal mandate from former President Bill Clinton. This mandate required agencies and other recipients of federal funding to provide language assistance to people with limited English proficiency.
