New York, NY—Today, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing Attorney General Pam Bondi and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem to identify cities and states with “sanctuary jurisdictions.” Cities and states identified on the list could face cuts in federal funding and possible criminal and civil suits for democratically enacted laws that promote public safety.

In its first 100 days, in a "flood the zone approach,” the Trump Administration has issued over 25 presidential orders (executive orders, presidential memoranda and presidential proclamations) and taken hundreds of policy actions on immigration. These actions test the boundaries of executive power and the law, and as a result, litigation challenging the legality of these polices abound.

New York, NY—Today, New York City Mayor Eric Adams refused to condemn the disappearance of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, instead alluding to “gangs” and “bad people” as a justification. The Supreme Court of the United States, in a 9-0 decision, reaffirmed a lower court’s order that Abrego Garcia be returned to the U.S. from El Salvador.

New York, NY—Today, a United States federal appeals court rejected the Trump administration’s request for a stay of a district court order blocking the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for more than 350,000 Venezuelans, preventing thousands of New Yorkers from facing deportation and the loss of work authorization.

New York, NY—Yesterday, Columbia University student activist Mohsen Mahdawi was detained by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at a citizenship appointment in Colchester, Vermont. Mahdawi has a green card and has lived in the United States for over a decade.

New York, NY—Today, an immigration judge in Louisiana ruled that Mahmoud Khalil is eligible to be deported. His removal proceedings will move forward in Louisiana, while a separate case will move forward in New Jersey examining the legality and constitutionality of his detention.

New York—Today, the ICE Out! NYC Coalition, Shut Rikers Campaign, New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), Make the Road Action, Bronx Defenders, the Immigrant Defense Project, the Katal Center for Equity, Health, and Justice, elected officials, immigrants and people directly impacted by detention at Rikers held a rally and press conference outside City Hall to denounce an executive order issued by the Mayor on Tuesday allowing ICE to establish an office within Rikers Island jail.

New York, NY—Today, NYC Mayor Eric Adams’ new Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro announced the opening of an ICE office on Rikers Island. This follows Adams’ coordination and public appearances with “border czar” Thomas Homan, and comes after Adams’ corruption case was dropped.

New York, NY—Today, it was reported that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reached an agreement to collaborate with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to share sensitive information on undocumented taxpayers with removal orders. 

The IRS is mandated to guard tax information within its agencies, and over the years, it has consistently assured undocumented taxpayers that their information is confidential and that it is safe for them to file tax returns.
