New York, NY—On Thursday, a man died in detention in a Nassau County jail after being arrested by ICE. Nassau County contracts to lease jail cells to ICE, and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman signed 287(g) agreements with ICE in February 2025. The 287(g) agreement deputizes the Nassau County Police Department and Nassau County Sheriff's Office for the purpose of federal immigration enforcement and detentions.

New York, NY—Today, New York State Supreme Court Judge Mary Rosado barred Mayor Eric Adams from re-opening an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office at Rikers, declaring Executive Order No. 50 on the matter "null and void."

New York, NY—Today, in a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court sided with the Trump administration and, at least temporarily, put aside a federal judge’s order that had restricted ICE from racial profiling when conducting immigration enforcement in Los Angeles.

New York, NY—Today, Senior Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Lewis Kaplan issued a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) requiring that ICE meet baseline conditions for holding people on the 10th floor of 26 Federal Plaza including proper spacing, bedding, food, water, hygiene, clean clothes, medication, access to a doctor and legal phone calls.

New York, NY—This morning, NYIC President Murad Awawdeh joined Members of Congress Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), Nydia Velázquez (NY-07), and Dan Goldman (NY10) in an oversight visit to MDC Brooklyn, where over 100 immigrants are now being detained under a new ICE-Bureau of Prisons agreement.

New York, NY—Yesterday, Yeonsoo Go was released from ICE custody, five days after she was detained at 26 Federal Plaza at a routine court hearing. Despite following the proper legal process, she was sent to a federal detention facility in Louisiana after being detained on the 10th floor of 26 Federal Plaza.

New York, NY—Yesterday, Mayor Adams vetoed Introduction 47-B, a legislation that would have removed criminal penalties for unlicensed street vendors across New York City and would instead have replaced them with civil fines. Last month, the New York City Council passed the bill with a 40-member majority.

New York, NY—Today, the US Justice Department of Donald Trump filed a federal lawsuit in the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York challenging New York City’s sanctuary policies. The basis of the 37-page lawsuit is that New York’s local policies are “impeding the consultation and communication between federal and local law enforcement officials that is necessary for the United States to enforce the law and keep Americans safe.

New York—Today, newly released video shows what immigrant New Yorkers have been telling their families and attorneys for months: the 10th Floor of 26 Federal Plaza is an ICE detention facility.

New York, NY—Yesterday, the Trump administration announced plans to restrict undocumented immigrants from enrolling in Head Start, the federally funded preschool program, as well as more than a dozen other programs. Other impacted programs include those focused on substance abuse, mental health, drug-treatment programs, and behavioral health programs  

The Trump administration issued a new interpretation of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA). Under the interpretation—which differs from interpretations when the law was passed— programs intended for the good of the community are no longer exempted from rules that limit benefits eligibility to citizens and legal residents.
