Reconciliation Budget Funnels Billions into Trump’s Mass Deportation Agenda, Slashing Social Safety Programs for Millions of Americans

New York, NY—Today, the United States House of Representatives passed Donald Trump’s reconciliation bill on a 218-214 vote, which will make billionaires richer and force hard working Americans to face devastating consequences.

Trump’s reconciliation budget will now allocate more than $150 billion for immigration enforcement, including nearly $30 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to seize and deport immigrants, and more than $50 billion for Customs and Border Protection to build the southern border wall, supercharging Trump’s mass deportation agenda. The legislation now heads to Trump’s desk for his signature.

Murad Awawdeh, President and CEO, New York Immigration Coalition:

“This budget prioritizes the wealthy and Trump’s mass deportation agenda at the expense of the real needs of everyone who calls America home. Seventeen million people stand to lose access to healthcare, critical social safety net programs will face devastating cuts, and taxpayer dollars will be funneled into a system built to dehumanize immigrants. Fourteen million children who rely on Medicaid and SNAP will be put at risk. Over three million adult New Yorkers will lose their Medicaid coverage. More than 125,000 children in New York alone stand to lose the Child Tax Credit simply because their parents are immigrants. These cuts to the American social safety net are how the Trump administration will underwrite its $150 billion anti-immigrant agenda for more masked immigration agents, daily abductions of our neighbors, and illegal flights of immigrants to unrelated third countries. We reject this inhumane budget and urge Congress to reverse course, and fight for a country where all families have opportunity and access to the American Dream.”
