New York, NY—Today, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James announced a lawsuit against the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office for failing to comply with the state’s Local Cops, Local Crimes Act. The legislation prohibits New York State and local law enforcement agencies and local governments from entering into or maintaining 287(g) agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for federal civil immigration enforcement and requires any agreements in place to be terminated by August 25, 2026. Rensselaer County Sheriff Kyle Bourgault has refused to terminate its 287(g) agreement.

New York, NY—On Monday, the U.S. Department of Justice sued New York, Connecticut and Vermont over policies that make in-state tuition available to residents regardless of their immigration status.

New York, NY—A third person has now died in detention at Delaney Hall. The death of the individual occurred at the end of July 2026 and was not disclosed until an unannounced oversight visit at the New Jersey facility took place earlier this week. 

This marks the third known death at the facility, including Edwin Cornejo Lopez, which happened this weekend, and Jean Wilson Brutus, who passed away in December 2025.

New York, NY—Today, New York’s law prohibiting federal immigration agents from wearing masks and requiring them to display identification was blocked after a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction halting the ban. The Department of Justice has remained opposed to New York’s efforts to rein in ICE operations, including the mask ban.
