Senate Passes Reconciliation Budget, Supercharging Trump’s Mass Deportation Agenda

New York, NY—Today, the United States Senate narrowly passed Donald Trump’s reconciliation bill in a 51-50 vote, advancing the legislation to the House of Representatives. If approved there, it will move forward to Trump’s desk for his signature. The Senate’s bill would allocate more than $150 billion for immigration enforcement, including nearly $30 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to seize and deport immigrants, and more than $50 billion for Customs and Border Protection to build the southern border wall, supercharging Trump’s mass deportation agenda.

Murad Awawdeh, President and CEO, New York Immigration Coalition:

“This budget prioritizes the wealthy and Trump’s mass deportation agenda at the expense of the real needs of everyone who calls America home. Seventeen million people stand to lose access to healthcare, critical social safety net programs will face devastating cuts, and taxpayer dollars will be funneled into a system built to dehumanize immigrants. Fourteen million children who rely on Medicaid and SNAP will be put at risk. These cuts to the American social safety net are how the Trump administration will underwrite its $150 billion anti-immigrant agenda for more masked immigration agents, daily abductions of our neighbors, and illegal flights of immigrants to unrelated third countries. Every community deserves safety, dignity, and the freedom to thrive, regardless of where they were born. We call on the New York Congressional Delegation and Congress to reject this inhumane budget and fight for a country where all families have the opportunity and access to the American Dream.”
