New York, NY—Today, the United States Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem, announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Honduras and Nicaragua. The move will remove legal status from more than 50,000 current Honduran and Nicaraguan TPS holders, including removing access to work permits and protection from deportation, when the termination becomes effective on September 5, 2025.
The Trump administration has now revoked TPS for the following countries since taking office in January 2025: Afghanistan, Venezuela, Cameroon, Nepal, Haiti, and now Honduras and Nicaragua.
Murad Awawdeh, President and CEO, New York Immigration Coalition:
“The Trump administration is actively choosing to strip legal status from hundreds of thousands of people who have long lived and worked in America—upending lives, tearing apart families, and destabilizing communities across the country. Since taking office, Trump has rescinded TPS humanitarian protection for an estimated 600,000 immigrants from seven countries, making people who escaped political turmoil and natural disasters undocumented, despite them having followed all legal protocols and requirements. This most recent abrupt termination will force thousands of immigrant New Yorkers into legal limbo and jeopardy. Now, with no clear path forward, immigrant families are being ordered to live in the shadows, uproot their lives after decades in America, or be deported to countries that remain unsafe. We call on the Trump Administration to rescind this action and demand that Congress create permanent legal pathways to protect our immigrant families to keep our economy stable and our communities strong.”
