City Budget Delivers Key Wins for Immigrant New Yorkers: Legal Services, Childcare, Libraries & more

New York, NY—Today, the New York City Mayor and the City Council announced a handshake deal on a $115.9 billion executive budget for FY26. The NYIC fought for a range of programs to support immigrant New Yorkers, and applauds the inclusion of several priorities in this deal, including $55 million in immigration related legal services and $10 million in funding for universal childcare.

DHS Terminates TPS for Haiti, Leaving Haitian New Yorkers at Risk of Deportation

New York, NY—Today, the United States Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem, announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS), leaving 500,000 Haitians without work permits and deportations. 

The temporary parole program will expire for individuals on August 3, 2025, and the termination will take effect on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

“The Trump administration’s decision to end TPS for Haiti is a cruel attack on Haitian New Yorkers and is another example of this administration’s ongoing efforts to destabilize immigrant communities and tear families apart.

Mahmoud Khalil Will Finally Be Freed

New York, NY—Today, federal judge Michael E. Farbiarz of Federal District Court in Newark ruled that Mahmoud Khalil – a legal permanent resident of the United States and Columbia University student activist – be freed from ICE detention. Khalil has been held in a detention facility in Louisiana for three months solely on the basis of his political speech as a student, during which time his wife gave birth to their first child alone.

Arrest of NYC Comptroller is an Outrageous Abuse of Power

New York, NY—Today, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested New York City Comptroller Brad Lander at 26 Federal Plaza after trying to escort a man out of immigration court.

NYS Supreme Court Bars Adams From Opening ICE Office at Rikers

New York, NY—Today, the Supreme Court of the State of New York issued a preliminary injunction barring Mayor Eric Adams from opening an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office at Rikers.
