Immigrant Advocates Applaud Ida Aid for All NYers, Regardless of Immigration Status

New York, NY—The New York Immigration Coalition applauded Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Bill de Blasio’s decision to provide $27 million in cash assistance for flooding victims excluded from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) help. The state and city will pay for the fund jointly and the money will be aimed at New Yorkers ineligible for aid through FEMA because of their immigration status.

Murad Awawdeh, Executive Director, New York Immigration Coalition:

“Hurricane Ida brought unexpected and devastating damage to our city and to too many immigrant New York families. Coupled with a pandemic, Hurricane Ida’s impact on our immigrant communities left many households devastated, especially since many of our immigrant workers continue to be excluded from all federal financial assistance. We applaud Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Bill de Blasio for ensuring that every New Yorker, regardless of their immigration status, can rebuild their life in the wake of Hurricane Ida. Going forward, it is vital that our city, state and Federal planning on climate change does not leave any New Yorker behind.”
