With SCOTUS Reviving Immoral Remain in Mexico Policy, Biden Must Redouble Efforts to End Unlawful Program

New York, NY-Late Tuesday evening, the Supreme Court of the United State (SCOTUS) allowed a lower Federal court order mandating the US government restart the controversial “Remain in Mexico policy.”  As part of an effort to fulfill a campaign promise, President Joseph R. Biden suspended the program in January and formally ended it in June. The order came in the case Texas v Biden, which sought to reverse the Biden administration’s decisions. Begun by President Donald J. Trump, the Remain in Mexico policy forced individuals to wait in Mexico while seeking asylum in the U.S.

Murad Awawdeh, Executive Director, New York Immigration Coalition:

"Last night, far-right Justices blew fresh life into the unlawful and cruel Remain in Mexico policy. This ruling ensures our asylum system will remain broken and families seeking safety will continue to face deadly and inhumane conditions. The Biden administration can, and must, reject this return to a campaign of family separation. Now is the time to repair our broken asylum system and restore America's status as a country that welcomes anyone seeking refuge.”
