New York, NY- Late on Thursday, the Supreme Court of the United States blocked New York State’s eviction moratorium. The emergency order specifically targeted the COVID Emergency Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Act, which protected renters from eviction during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul, who will become Governor in less than two weeks, promised to work closely with the state’s legislature in response to the ruling.

“While New York’s working families are battling to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table, the highest court in the land elected to snatch away one of the few lifelines these New Yorkers have. We applaud Lt Governor Kathy Hochul’s forceful response to this cruel and baffling assault on our state. This heartless ruling makes it even more critical for incoming Governor Hochul and the NYS Department of Labor to remove any unnecessary barriers keeping thousands of immigrant New Yorkers from accessing the Fund for Excluded Workers, access that would help so many of them keep their families housed and healthy. Doing so will deliver some needed relief for the New Yorkers cut out from all federal aid and ensure all New Yorkers can get on the road to recovery.”
