BREAKING: Immigrant Advocates Condemn Trump’s Fake Border Deal

January 19th, 2019

NEW YORK, NY - Today, President Trump announced a “deal” demanding a $5.7 million border wall in exchange for the temporary protection of immigrant youth, known as Dreamers, and recipients of Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

Steven Choi, Executive Director of the New York Immigration Coalition, issued the following statement:

"As hundreds of thousands of women and allies rallied around the country to stand up for immigrant women, Trump was doubling down on his immoral, wasteful vanity southern border wall. The empty promises in this “deal” the President offered are nothing but a slap in the face to the immigrant families, businesses and communities who make this country great every day. We call on Senator Schumer and Speaker Pelosi to reject this false flag and stand resolute in demanding Trump end this.”

Background

The BRIDGE Act as initially introduced in 2016 would provide applicants temporary provisional protected status and work authorization that would be valid from the time the person received it until the point in time that is three years after the BRIDGE Act is enacted - and no longer. The requirements applicants would have to meet are essentially the same as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
